Frequently Asked Questions About Insurance Claims

Get clear, authoritative answers to common questions regarding motor, health, and personal accident claims in India.

What is the time limit for intimating a motor or health insurance claim?

As per IRDAI guidelines, motor insurance claims should ideally be intimated within 24 to 48 hours of an accident. For planned hospital admissions, health insurance claims should be intimated 48 hours prior to admission, while emergency hospitalizations must be notified within 24 hours of admission to secure cashless benefits.

What is the difference between cashless claims and reimbursement claims?

In a cashless claim, your insurance provider pays the network garage or hospital directly for approved repair or medical expenses, requiring you to pay only deductibles or non-covered items. In a reimbursement claim, you pay the bills upfront out of pocket and subsequently submit original invoices and medical reports to the insurer for reimbursement.

Does filing a claim affect my No Claim Bonus (NCB)?

Yes, filing an own-damage claim under a standard motor policy resets your accumulated No Claim Bonus to 0% for the subsequent renewal year. However, if your policy includes an NCB Protect Add-on cover, your accumulated NCB discount remains intact even after making an eligible claim.

What can I do if my insurance claim is wrongfully rejected or delayed?

If your claim is wrongfully denied, Insuremile assists you in filing a formal grievance representation with the insurer’s Grievance Redressal Officer. If the issue remains unresolved after 15 business days, we help you draft and submit a formal petition to the IRDAI BIMA BHAROSA portal or the Regional Insurance Ombudsman.
